Building Great Windows 7 Apps

By

The latest version of Microsoft’s IDE for development on Windows and other Microsoft platforms has recently been released, which is Visual Studio 2010.

You may have seen my post some time ago about the long list of new features and improvements that have made it into the latest version.

At the recent UK Tech Days event, Microsoft’s GM for Visual Studio gave a presentation on building great Windows 7 apps with Visual Studio. He made lots of good points, and mentioned lots of cool features. Well worth checking out the video, which I have embedded below.

New in Visual Studio 2010

I was recently at an all-day event with Scott Guthrie from Microsoft – read about the event here. Here I collect what he had to say about what’s new in Visual Studio 2010, which is launching very soon. It’s going to be a quick run-down of some new features, and hopefully I will be able to dive into deeper demos in other posts.

Team Foundation Server for Students

By

Team Foundation Server is a product that Microsoft have been selling to work with Visual Studio for many years now. Over time it has evolved, and with the upcoming release of Visual Studio 2010, I thought now would be a great time to check out Team Foundation Server in more detail; specifically how it can help students get their projects done faster and better.

Team Foundation Server used to be the companion to Visual Studio Team System (which acted as the client). With VS 2010, Team System has been integrated into the core of Visual Studio. This provides two benefits – better support as it’s baked right in, and more students can get access to it for free!

There are 3 main targets of Team System:

Visual Studio 2010 Beta

By

Following on from my recent post on Office 2010, I thought I’d get on and try the latest piece of beta software that Microsoft has unleashed upon its users.

Visual Studio 2010 is the latest version of Microsoft’s application development workhorse; with it comes version 4 of the .NET Framework, and a whole raft of improvements that developers have long been calling out for.

Getting Started with Visual Studio

By

A few months ago I was asked to do a presentation at the University of Reading for students about to go into their final year of their IT degrees. The subject of the presentation was how Microsoft tools and technology could help them complete their aims of their final year projects.

I put together a presentation, and as part of that I also put together a practical which I encouraged the attendees to complete to give them a sample of what they could do with Visual Studio on Windows and Silverlight.

If you’re interested in Windows development but don’t know where to start, or you’d like to get stuck into Visual Studio but need a few pointers, I have attached the file below for you to download and have a go.

Let me know any feedback and how you get on in the comments!
