Recently, Twitter took over Atebits, makers of the ridiculously popular Tweetie Twitter client for iPhone and Mac.

They’ve made their mark, and yesterday Twitter for iPhone landed on the app store – to much critical talk. Let’s take a look at the new client.

Why The iPhone Has Made Developers Soft

I have spent many a blog post and tweet bemoaning Apple’s “ludicrous” and “draconian” App Store policies; but recently I’ve been power-using my iPhone for all kinds of things, and I think I’ve found another problem with iPhone applications.

To be fair, this probably isn’t an issue just with iPhone developers; more an issue with some programmers working in limited environments. However, the iPhone remains my scapegoat of choice for the moment, and the title stands.

Actually, it just depends on how you want to use it.

Since the Nexus One appeared towards the start of the year, I have basically spent all my time trying to convince myself to wait at least for the European model before I splash some serious cash on it.

Today I noticed a commentary on one TechCrunch’s blog posts about the Nexus One vs iPhone.

You may have seen me bemoaning using Twitter on my iPhone recently.

This is for two reasons. First of all, it is an original iPhone, and is therefore terrible. Second of all, I was using TweetDeck, which seems to be the only app in the store still free and not completely stuffed with ads – and also the slowest and most bloated.

Back to the job at hand – Tweetie 2. I have used this for about 20 minutes, and it’s a masterpiece. Here’s why.

But first of all it was jailbreaking and unlocking for me – twice for each, in fact. First time to actually get the device working and running its 2.0 firmware, followed by the whole process again to get iPhone OS 3.0 rocking the device.

There’s lots of cool things about the iPhone, and lots of stuff that make me really want to go and find someone from Apple to interrogate them on what exactly they were thinking.
